Climate protection high on the agenda

Mar 25, 2014

Integrated climate strategies, the expansion of renewable energy, more footpaths and cycle ways: these are the priorities of the Alpine towns of the year as regards climate protection. Below is a summary of the results of an analysis from the Alpstar project.

The international Alpstar project wants to give answers to the question of how the Alps can become climate-neutral by the year 2050. Thus in individual regions, for example in the cities of Bozen/Bolzano in Italy and Idrija in Slovenia, good examples are being tested and further measures developed. But what is the actual situation as regards climate protection in the Alpine towns of the year? Research establishments like EURAC in Bozen/Bolzano, ministries and environmental organisations that are together implementing the Alpstar project have developed their own instrument in order to provide an answer to this question. The tool provides an overview of current strengths and weaknesses as well as of the future opportunities and risks in towns and regions.

Climate and energy experts in eleven Alpine towns of the year have answered some 120 questions. The results of this Alpstar analysis show that “soft” mobility such as bikes and footpaths or e-bikes play an important role for the towns. There is however a need to improve car-sharing initiatives and traffic planning. High on the agenda are measures to improve people’s awareness of energy efficiency and renewable energies. Around one half of the towns asked already have a climate strategy or are in the process of preparing such a strategy, including in Idrija: the 2011 Alpine town of the year is the first Slovenian city to conduct a SEAP, i.e. an analysis of where and how much CO2 is being emitted.
The Alpstar project is creating the basis for future initiatives with this analysis: the Alpine towns aim to draw up local energy plans together, implement climate-friendly mobility measures and improve the networking of towns with the surrounding countryside.
